The Civil Award

Renown Pakistani cartoonist and Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network member Nigar Nazar is scheduled to be presented the landmark Civic Award by the Pakistani government for her meritorious work in art on National Day, March 23. It’s just the latest honor. Her work was featured in solo exhibition at the University of Alcalá in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, from January 27 through March 5. The show “Gogi Visita España (Gogi Visits Spain)” showcased Nazar’s signature character
Gogi, a young, progressive Pakistani woman who frequently addresses issues like women’s rights and climate change in humorous ways. Nazar has drawn the newspaper strip since 1970. She also gave a lecture titled “Toward Equality with Humor,” which was broadcast
live on the university’s YouTube channel, and she conducted workshops at an elementary school, a high school, and the university.

Rawalpindi Women University

Womens’ Day-Celebrated Down Memory Lane
I was invited by Rawalpindi Women University, the former Government College for Women ,6th Road as the Guest Speaker on Womens Day .
Going to my old Alma mater which has come of age as a University now was a sentimental journey. After 44 years even the trees looked so much bigger, leave alone the building which was not recognizable.
This was the college where I changed my direction from Pre Medical to Fine Arts and English Literature. The audience was quite huge and the auditorium even huger.I was taken to the exhibition by Fine Arts students, fine work no doubt.
After the cordial introductions to the faculty and student body by Ms. Huma Fawad, incharge Student affairs I was lead into the Hall which was nonexistent back in the day.
I gave my speech with a presentation of cartoons on Women issues much to the delight of the students. What they enjoyed most was the animated Gogi spot on sexual harassment ;the habit which has almost become a national character ….oggling men..Despite which the women are getting into all professional fields
“I don’t see the dark clouds .I see the Silver lining in the dark clouds which are you women of the future “,I told the girls
A set of Gogi comics was gifted to Ms.Huma and Gulnaz Akhtar for the Library along with the book on Climate change ,”My Treebook”
